People receiving the Manx State Pension can expect to see their weekly income rise in April 2026 by £11.81, from £251.30 to £263.11 – but only if the Triple Lock Protection is maintained for the next financial year. This would be an increase of 4.7%, but is likely to be under attack from Manx ministers such as Alex Allinson, David Ashford, and Daphne Caine, who have previously fought to break the Triple Lock Protection and cut the Manx State Pension.

Triple Lock Numbers

The current Triple Lock Protection provides that the Manx pension will increase in line with whichever of these three measures is the highest:

  • inflation, as measured by the UK’s Consumer Prices Index (CPI) in the
    September of the previous year;
  • the average increase in wages across the UK; or
  • 2.5%.

The UK’s Consumer Prices Index is likely to be around 4%1. The UK’s Office for National Statistics revealed last week that the wage increase in the UK was 4.7%. Coincidentally, the 4.7% increase will match the percentage increase in Manx median weekly earnings last year, which is higher than the current Manx inflation rate of 3.3%.

Triple lock increase not guaranteed: Ashford, Caine and Allinson opposed

However, the 4.7% increase in pensions is not guaranteed, with a number of Manx politicians being publicly opposed to the Triple Lock Protection. In February 2022, then-Treasury Minister David Ashford announced in his first and only budget that the mechanism would be broken, arguing that extraordinary economic circumstances at the time made the policy unaffordable. Caine and Allinson voted in favour of breaking the Triple Lock Protection as part of the Isle of Man Government budget.

More recently, left-wing ministers in the Isle of Man have attacked the triple lock protections for current and future pensioners. Minister Daphne Caine, wrote that “breaking the triple lock would be a step forward for the Isle of Man.” Similarly, Treasury Minister Alex Allinson said, “In my view [the triple lock] is not sustainable.”

“I appreciate that breaking the triple lock may be seen as an attack on pensioners but we need to have an eye on the longer-term impact”

Daphne Caine, 6 February 2025

Caine and Allinson’s proposed pension cuts

Earlier this year, left-wing Ministers Caine and Allison went on a public offensive proposing a cut to the Manx State Pension. Their proposal was for the Manx State Pension to only rise by either the preceding September’s figure for Manx CPI inflation or 2%, whichever is higher.

With Manx CPI inflation currently at 3.3%, this would represent a cut in the Manx State Pension by more than 1%.

Triple lock increase would boost Manx pensioners

The Manx inflation rate over the past year has averaged around 3.3%, meaning that a 4.7% uplift would represent a real-terms gain for thousands of Manx pensioners. Many households will welcome the increase as living costs remain high, particularly energy and housing.

With the UK now pressing ahead with another sizeable pension increase, attention will turn to the Manx Treasury’s next budget to see whether ministers Allinson and Caine are able to succeed in their effort to cut the Manx State Pension.
